The Warriors are among a lot of people the favorites to win the 2021 NBA championship. Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, who is returning from his ACL injury he suffered, and Draymond Green are going to be returning in the fold next season. The Warriors also have something that contenders such as the Lakers, Bucks, Nets, and Clippers don;t have, draft assets. Golden State has the number 2 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, which presents a lot of options that the Warriors could take to further cement themselves as championship favorites. The first option is to draft a player who they think can contribute in their efforts to compete right now. The player that comes to mind is James Wiseman. James Wiseman, is a 7 foot 1 center, out of the University of Memphis, who had limited college experience, but I think has a high potential to be a rim running center and defensive menace. A player that James Wiseman reminds me of is Deandre Jordan, who was known for receiving lob passes from Chris Paul and being such an integral piece during the Lob City days with the Los Angeles Clippers. Wiseman also has the ability to shoot from mid-range and his size makes him intriguing if the Warriors want to use him as a guy who can block shots and receive passes from players like Steph or Klay. Wiseman also has things he can improve on such as getting stronger, developing his body, and improving his inconsistent, but promising ability to shoot the three point shot. If James Wiseman is drafted by Golden State, I believe he would benefit substantially from a player development standpoint because the Warriors have a winning culture that has a great front office headed by Bob Myers, great coach in Steve Kerr, and great, future hall of fame players such as Curry, Thompson, and Draymond Green. Another option the Warriors have is to trade the #2 overall pick. Another player the Warriors could target is Deni Avidja. Avidja is an international prospect who plays in Israel and has great playmaking skills. Avidja is also a solid on ball defender and solid shooter, but needs a little bit more polishing on his shooting. He has nice size at 6 foot 9 and can be a nice role player for the Warriors if they decide to draft him. Avidja is not the most athletic player, but he is an intriguing playmaking wing who has solid skills that should translate well into the NBA. Another option is Lamelo Ball, the brother of Lonzo Ball. Lamelo is a 6 foot 7 point guard who is known for his extraordinary passing skills. Ball played for the Illawarra Hawks for the NBL, a basketball league in Australia. Ball has possibly the highest upside of any prospect in this draft and has the ability to create for his teammates at only 18 years old. He has an amazing feel for the game and if drafted by the right team, could be a really good player down the line. Lamelo also has limitations just like any other prospect. Ball tends to take questionable shots and has a wildly inconsistent jump shot that could translate to problems on the next level, and his unwillingness to give full effort on the defensive side of the ball. Ball has the tools to be a great defender, he just has to commit and put more effort into getting better defensively with his long wingspan. It is imperative that Ball works on his jump shot because it could help open his game up even more and create easy looks for his teammates. One of the best fits for Ball in this draft is the Golden State Warriors because he can get meaningful experience and know what it’s like to be in a high pressure situation with the Warriors wanting to compete for the championship in 2021, as well, as being able to learn from one of the greatest point guards of all time, Steph Curry. The other option that the Warriors could pursue is to trade the number 2 overall pick. A trade I think would make sense for Golden State if they decide to trade the #2 pick, is if the Warriors get Myles Turner and Doug McDermott from the Indiana Pacers, in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and the number 2 overall pick. Myles Turner is the ideal stretch big for the Warriors to target because he can space the floor and shoot from three point range. Another player the Warriors could target is to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo would be a great fit for the Warriors because he has two of the greatest shooters of all time in Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, that can feed him the ball and would most likely win a championship with Golden State. Overall, the Warriors have a very bright future, one of the best front offices in the NBA, and will be out for a vengeance to prove people wrong who doubted that their time of dominance is over.
